Albanians living outside our country can vote in the next parliamentary elections, says Parliament Speaker Lindita Nikolla, in a meeting being held this Tuesday by the CEC in cooperation with the OSCE Presence in Tirana.
In the National High Level Conference on “Voting from abroad, the time is now”, noting the fact that Albania has a high influx of emigrants, Nikolla says that the right to move should be related to the right to vote.
“Every citizen who has reached the age of 18 has the right to vote and to stand for election, and this right must be linked to the right to free movement. Albania is one of the countries with a high emigration flow”.
If immigrants gain the right to vote in the country where they live and work, the political system will have many benefits, according to the speaker of the assembly.
“There will only be benefits if the voter turnout is expanded. Albania is affected by remittances. The time has come for the measures to continue with the facilitation of their inclusion, the time has come for every Albanian citizen to vote, regardless of where he is on election day. “This can not be achieved in the next local elections, but it can be achieved in the next parliamentary elections.”.
“It is a very difficult and challenging process“, Says Nikolla, but emphasizes that it is a necessary process.
The US Ambassador to Albania, Yuri Kim, present at the conference, reiterated his support for this process, as an important element in strengthening democracy.
“It is time to undertake this process to give the diaspora the right to vote. It is important to ensure free voting, elections are a form of democracy. The US welcomes this opportunity. We encourage that in the next elections to have higher standards, to be safe elections. By defending democratic institutions, we can demonstrate the strength of democracy. We are stronger when we work together to achieve these goals”.
The Head of the OSCE Presence in Albania, Ambassador Vincenzo Del Monaco, said that “now is the time to work for the inclusion of migrants.
“All Albanians deserve to give their vote for what will represent them. It must guarantee the free vote of living Albanians. It should start with the registration of voters in the world. “Trust is the key word, where this process should be based.”.
