AstraZeneca is trying to deliver only 40 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine to the European Union by the end of March.
This is less than half of the amount promised in its contract for the first quarter of the year, said the executive director of this company, Pascal Soriot. Earlier, AstrazZeneca had promised to offer around 90 million doses in the first quarter of this year. The EU, which lags far behind the United States and the UK in vaccinating citizens, has repeatedly asked AstraZeneca to more doses of the vaccine.
“We are doing everything we can to give him 40 million doses in the first quarter of 2021”, said Soriot, but without giving any information about the supply in the second quarter of 2021. According to the contract, up to this stage of the year, the company is obliged to offer about 180 million doses of the vaccine.
The news comes just days after the EU indicated it was working hard to increase vaccinations and therefore said it had decided to buy an additional 300 million doses of the Moderna vaccine, while adding another $ 250 million to efforts to fight new variants of the coronavirus.
