Some images of the ‘iconic’ sculpture with eyes that look like closed, have caused both fear and humor on online networks, as officials in Cairo say we may be dealing with a game.
Social media users have long kept their eyes fixed on the Great Sphinx of Giza in Egypt as they began circulating images of the mysterious statue with their eyes closed.
The mythological creature with the body of a lion and the head of a man, is believed to show the face of Pharaoh Kafre who ruled for hundreds of years around 2,500 BC and was built with open eyes.
But with all the enigmas and riddles surrounding the Egyptian pyramids and their folklore of the origin of mankind, anything to do with the mysterious land raises deep curiosity about the simple mortals.
Many people were therefore shocked by the images of the Sphinx with their eyes closed that could be interpreted as a signal of major or apocalyptic changes in the universe.
A Facebook post showing the video of the Sphinx with its eyes closed sparked panic and has now been shared more than 7,000 times.
Some were convinced that the images were real while others rejected them as false.
A commenter on Twitter write“It’s great that he’s finally getting some sleep, he’s been awake for centuries and millennia.
The Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities told the network Erem news that the images may have been manipulated and added that this is not the first time the famous Sphinx has been involved in gossip.
The tourism ministry also denied the allegations, saying the Sphinx was “certainly smart” and that the images could have been taken from a certain angle or modified with Photoshop.
It is not even known who or why changed the images, or whether the Magic Sphinx may have closed its eyes.
It is the oldest monumental sculpture of Egypt and one of the most famous in the world.
Her name in the Egyptian language is “Abu al-Hol”, which means “father of fear” or various “the most terrible of all”.
