French President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday defended his idea of a “European political community” of nations seeking membership of the European Union, saying his idea was not intended to be an alternative to bloc membership. Macron clarified these statements during a conference with Moldovan President Maia Sandu.
“On May 9 in the European Parliament, I proposed a project for a European political community that aims to create a new framework for structuring cooperation, uniting European democratic nations that adhere to our set of values and that may or may not aspire to ‘became a member of the European Union. “This community is not an alternative to the membership process, but a complement which, despite it, allows for a stronger structuring of political, energy and investment relations with some countries that want it.”said Macron.
He told Sandu that there is a risk that the conflict in Ukraine will affect Moldova as well.
“Our meeting today takes place in a particularly dramatic context. Russia’s unacceptable aggression by Russia is a threat to the stability of the entire region and in particular of Moldova. “Recent incidents in the Transnistrian region of the Republic of Moldova show that a spread of conflict to neighboring countries can not be ruled out.” further added Macron.
Sandu, meanwhile, praised the idea of a “political community” that she saw as possible to accelerate Moldova’s bid to join the European Union.
“We understand that the membership process is long and complex and requires a lot of effort and a lot of work. “We are not looking for shortcuts.” said Sandu.
