Moscow announced this morning that more than 900 Ukrainian fighters who had been isolated at the Mariupol steel plant in Azovstal had been sent to a prison colony in Russian-controlled territory.
Ukraine ordered the troops there to withdraw as part of an agreement reached by both sides as it tries to save their lives. People sheltered in steel plant have suffered for weeks for water and food
A Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, Maria Zakharova, said yesterday that 959 Ukrainian servicemen had been displaced since Tuesday. Of those, 51 were being treated for their injuries and the rest had been sent to a former prison colony in the town of Olenivka in a Russian-controlled area of the Donetsk region.
The Defense Ministry in Kiev said it hoped for an exchange procedure, to repatriate these Ukrainian heroes as soon as possible.
Their fate remains unclear, with Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov declining to say whether they will be treated as criminals or prisoners of war.
Ukraine’s Defense Ministry vowed to do everything necessary to rescue those still trapped in the widespread network of tunnels and bunkers under the steel plant, but acknowledged that no military option was available.
