The US State Department announced that the US reopened its embassy in Kiev on Wednesday, after closing it for three months due to the Russian occupation of Ukraine.
“The Ukrainian people, with the help of our security, have defended their homeland against the unjustified invasion of Russia, and as a result, the Stars and Ribbons are waving over the embassy again,” said US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.
“We proudly stand by, and continue to support, the government and people of Ukraine as they defend their homeland from war and the Kremlin’s brutal aggression.”
The US State Department closed its embassy in Kiev on February 14, 10 days before Russian troops crossed the border, in a bid to topple the Ukrainian government and install another in line with Moscow’s policy.
U.S. diplomats continued to provide services from the western city of Lviv, sometimes staying overnight in neighboring Poland due to security concerns.
The return to Kiev came weeks after Ukrainian forces thwarted Russian efforts to take control of northern Ukraine and the capital, while fighting focused on the east and south of the country.
“As we take this important step, we have introduced additional measures to increase the security of our colleagues returning to Kiev and have improved our security measures and protocols,” Blinken said.
