Charleston Police in South Carolina today posted dramatic footage of officers clashing with a 2-foot-long alligator that they said was approaching a local school.
In the three-minute video, they are seen severely controlling the large reptile by first keeping its mouth shut and then tying it up.
“It was not like the arrests we make every day,” the official Facebook post said.
“Animal protection officials are removing an alligator from Daniel Island School. Our group was fearless in performing their duty! ”
In a statement to the media, police official Courtney Bayles said the animal was being considered a safety hazard by proximity to schools and residences.
He added: “We then released the alligator in the same direction it was going, towards a less populated area.”
Bayles explained that the numerous calls about alligators in the area come from the reptile mating season, which has recently been spotted in citizens’ pools, on their porches or in their cars.
“We have a duty to allow these wonderful animals a safe environment and to inform the public how we can coexist safely with these high-ranking predators.”
