Only a short time ago I really understood the reasons that pushed me to write a book on Russian mercenaries.
The first impetus came to me when I started reading again after a long period of intellectual stalemate. I read with one breath Lev Tolstoy’s The Tale of Sevastopol, and my hands instinctively turned to the computer keyboard.
I was tormented by the irresistible need to make my compatriots understand a very simple idea, which our public morality rejects. He even judges it as a sacrilege, as it is incompatible with the vision of historical development specific to Russia: we are like everyone else.
And that our so-called “special”, spiritual and romantic identity is nothing but a myth, nurtured by those who benefit from it. This book is not so much a narrative of the military adventures of a mercenary and his comrades, but rather an attempt to illustrate how Russia uses mercenarism.
We are told that “adventure soldiers” are a typical phenomenon in the West, and that mercenarism is a product of the “Hydra” of capitalism. But even we Russians have used mercenaries to promote the interests of our country abroad. Politicians remain silent about the existence of Russian private military companies, and completely reject any allusion to the use of such non-governmental formations.
For their part, the propagandists strongly indoctrinate ordinary Russians by instilling in them the idea of a Russian foreign policy, avoiding any direct answers to questions about the use of mercenaries. Who is comfortable with this condition? First of all, those who live at the expense of the people, trying to convince the same people of their usefulness.
Russian generals in Syria, for example, have successfully implemented a strategy they could have christened “There Is No Here,” creating the illusion of free, human-cost victories from the military. But the real numbers of Russian citizens who died in the war against the Islamic State do not match the official figures.
The number of Russian mercenaries killed in Syria is much higher than that of army soldiers. And yet, the participation of the CMP (private military company) is again used to feed the myth of a non-bloody war. The Russian army of all levels, present in Syria enjoys the glory of triumph, and has the luxury of being flattered by ignorant people, who have really risked their lives to defeat the Islamic State jihadists.
Political leaders also benefit from the situation, calling it a “phenomenon incompatible with our moral values.” The rescue of Bashar al-Assad’s regime has given Russia the opportunity to create the image of a protector of criminals of all kinds in every part of the world.
The African continent remains a virgin ground for Russian diplomacy and political strategists. Power is in the hands of unscrupulous leaders, who have been able to appreciate the assistance provided by Moscow to Damascus, and have shown willingness to let Russia take over the natural resources of their countries rich in gold, diamonds and diesel.
Russia’s reliance on mercenaries is a proven and indisputable fact. This book simply traces the story of one of them. Each of us chooses which ideals to fight for. One day I decided that if I had to go back to war, I would do so just to end the war.
I’m not the only one who thinks so, but we’re still a minority. Others are ready to serve God and Mammon. After all they are mercenaries. On February 24, the president of the Russian Federation launched a “special operation” against what he called the “Nazi regime in Ukraine.”
But within a few days the “special operation” turned out to be a full-scale war: cities destroyed, civilians killed. In a conflict, discussing which party is responsible for civilian deaths makes no sense. It is always the aggressor who errs. The one who started the war is the only one who has to answer for its consequences.
Judging by sophisticated weapons and ammunition with ACCURATELY high and powerful, it seems that Russia has started preparations for war long ago, investing billions of dollars in this project, and this at a time when the elderly in Russia are forced to live on degrading pensions, and medical treatment For kidset funded by fundraising campaigns on TV!
What about the army? Despite the total dominance of airspace and the superiority of modern weapons, it has suffered great losses. The Russian Ministry of Defense does not lie when declaring the number of dead, but does not say everything. A soldier whose body is found and identified is considered dead.
Unidentified or abandoned waste in enemy territory is briefly classified with the term “its fate is unknown”. The National Guard, Rosgvardia, is not part of the army and the Ministry of Defense is not obliged to count them as losses in its ranks. The same goes for the armed formations of the separatist republics in Eastern Ukraine.
When Russia got involved in the war in Syria, the Russian army sent mercenaries to do the field work, and today it is reaping the “benefits” of that artificial victory. Yesterday the Russian army fought without much motivation against the Islamic State, the ideological plague of the 21st century. Today she is sacrificing her warriors with great zeal in a war against a sister nation.
The murdered Russian mercenaries are registered in a special list, which remains secret. And their number in Ukraine is large, on all fronts of the so-called special operation. Formations in the separatist republics of Donbas, known only to Russia and which in 8 years have had only one defense strategy, would not be able to carry out offensive operations without the support of another force, that of the mercenaries.
Until recently, there were at least 2 mercenary detachments around Kiev, designated specifically for this operation. Furthermore, 3 Wagner Group detachments are taking part in the fighting in Mariupol and Kharkiv. Mercenaries are paid in dollars. The new trend within the Russian occupying forces is the exchange of patriotism for dollars. Ideology has nothing to do with it, it matters to fill your pocket with money.
After Russia? As usual, the majority approves of the party and government line. The brains of my compatriots, whom propaganda has turned into jelly, accept the idea without any problems
of “denazification” and “demilitarization” of Ukraine. Every May 9, Russians exhibit photos of their loved ones who fell in the Great Patriotic War, but do not dare to deal with the “dangerous” Chechen.
The appropriation of the victory of the fathers is no longer enough to satisfy their perverted minds or lust for greatness. This time the culprit of all evil is the “Nazi” regime of Ukraine and his Western and American supporters, who have always been hostile to us.
The Russian people triumph and write the letter “Z” on the walls and vehicles. And victory in this war, the name of which should not be pronounced, is already guaranteed in advance by the law punishing any form of dissidence or narrative that deviates from the official version.
Television, radio and newspapers are censoredruara, and not everyone knows how to bypass censorship filters online, they do not even feel the need to do so. This is the ideal situation to turn any kind into victoryj loss. The economic hardships associated with international isolation do not frighten most Russians, who have never lived in abundance or have not had time to get used to it.
Friendship with developing countries, very costly for our budget, and asymmetric cooperation with China seem an acceptable solution to resist the “dictates” of the West, where “dictates” means the ability to negotiate and set standards of high to remain competitive.
It is difficult to predict what will happen to my country and to me. Am I afraid for my life and my freedom? I am not a prominent figure like Alexei Navalni or Boris Nemcov. I do not call for protests and I do not lead any opposition movement. All I can do is speak openly and with knowledge of the facts.
Will they accuse me of being an enemy of the people? Now this expression is used to mark anyone who dares to say out loud, what some prefer to pass over silently and that others do not want to accept. I am ready to live with this stigma, which only makes sense for those who put labels. Time will tell what will happen. / “Il fatto Quotidiano” – Bota.al
