The Law Commission met this Monday for the first round of selecting the new President.
The head of the PD parliamentary group, Enkelejd Alibeaj, said that the first round failed due to the majority.
“These meetings are not routine, just to see the letters. It is part of a process, both institutional and political. The Law Commission plays its role. I would like to inform you about the political position of the DP. We have indicated that this process must meet and fulfill certain criteria, to give Albanians their man, the head of state. To get out of the not always healthy tradition in selecting the president, before achieving such a product we have some obligations. We must create a process in the eyes of parliament. There will have to be some attitudes between the political parties that in reality are essentially created. Our position has been made known. The Constitution of the Republic stipulates that this process be conducted on an institutional basis. 84 votes determine that the opposition has a substantial role. The majority as it has the numbers and legitimacy to proceed unilaterally in the selection of the president. We expect attitude from the majority. Are you for the election of the president according to the spirit of the Constitution? This failure of this first round, I would not like to do provocation, but rests on your shoulders. You have to take a stand. The pleadings made by your highest representatives seem to have been farce. We are always waiting for your stay, to see what product will come out “said Alibeaj.
MP Klotilda Bushka invited the parties to be more cooperative in proposing names, so that the process does not create deadlocks.
“No one can block a parliamentary process. I am aware, as part of the conference of mayors that they have been invited to attend the sessions. I do not know at what stage you are with the discussions. The logic is that we as a commission in addition to the goal to give the correct position to the candidacies. The constitution gives us two tasks is the evaluation of the criteria, which requires that the candidate for President be an Albanian citizen by birth. Two criteria are important and should be evaluated by us. The first has to do with reviewing the purity of the past. Must have integrity in accordance with the criteria provided and must be a subject not prohibited from running as a decriminalization law. I invite the parties to be more involved, not to be giving guessing or advice. Everyone should start from themselves “said Bushka.
16:00 this Sunday was the deadline for submitting candidates for the first round of the election of the new president on Monday in parliament. No candidacy has been submitted to the assembly secretariat. In such conditions, the first round today at 17:00, will take place without having a name to vote. Despite the lack of a name the first round under the constitution will be called exhausted to give way to the second round.
