A schoolgirl has reportedly been brutally killed by mobs in northern Nigeria after sending a message that was considered blasphemous against the Muslim prophet Muhammad.
The angry mob reportedly forcibly pulled Deborah Yakubu out of the room where she was hiding at the Shehu Shagari school in Sokoto, northwestern Nigeria, to commit the horrific murder, according to police.
A few days earlier, Deborah who was reportedly a Christian, had left a voice message in the class group on Whatsapp complaining that there were too many religious messages in the academic program.
A student colleague had responded by saying that Deborah had just “done basfemi”, and the incident started circulating among the student community.
Consequently an angry mob formed to find Deborah, who was hiding in the school security room, under the protection of the guards. But unfortunately they failed to protect him.
“The gathered students forcibly removed him from the security room where the officials were holding him. “They killed him, burned him and then set the building on fire,” said police spokesman Sanusi Abubakar.
So far, two arrests have been made for the event, after the publication of a video where they celebrate with arsonists.
The death has caused widespread outrage in the African country by widening the divide between religious and ethnic lines, exploited by rulers and militant groups.
The murder of Deborah Yakubu is not the first for perceived blasphemy motives by crowds in northern Nigeria.
Christianah Oluwasesin, a teacher in Nigeria’s Gombe region, was killed in 2007 when she stopped a student from entering the school with some books and took them to throw out.
The student then said that one of the books was the Muslim Qur’an so a trumpet was created that beat him and shot him to death with a knife.
Opposition MP Atiku Abubakar condemned Deborah’s assassination but later canceled the post after many Muslim voters vowed not to vote for him anymore.
