Germany’s largest opposition parliamentary group, the CDU / CSU, has asked the German government for active support for Kosovo’s membership in the EC.
In a press release, Thursday, 12.05. in the evening, the CDU deputy, Michael Brandwrites that “The application of the Republic of Kosovo for membership in the Council of Europe is a logical step”. Brand estimates that “Kosovo in the recent past has made great progress in terms of the rule of law and the fight against corruption and crime.”
Brand, who chairs the CDU / CSU Parliamentary Working Group on Human Rights and Humanitarian Aid, said:
“No other European country refers so clearly in the Constitution to the European Court of Human Rights. “Its jurisdiction is already recognized as mandatory for Kosovo.”
Brand further writes that Kosovo is “by far the most pro-European country in the Balkans”, arguing that more than 90 percent of the population is consistently in favor of EU and NATO integration.
“Under the new government, the country is pursuing an absolutely pro-European and pro-Western policy. “The Kosovo government has also very quickly joined all Western sanctions against Russia.”
Brand says membership in Euro-Atlantic structures would create stability in the Balkans.
“At the turning point after Russia’s attack on Ukraine, the federal government must actively support Kosovo’s application for EU and NATO membership, so that peace in other parts of Europe, especially in the Balkans, is no longer endangered by the actions of Russia and Serbia. “From pro-Russian propaganda to military maneuvers.”
The right moment
The most important contribution to this is the full recognition of the borders in Europe, further writes the German MP.
“If Serbia and Russia can not continue their dangerous border game in the Balkans, the risk of a new conflict there will be significantly reduced. “Support for the Republic of Kosovo’s membership in the Council of Europe will have a stabilizing effect in the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina, where Serbian extremists, allied with Russia, are also questioning the borders.”
The CDU politician explains why now is the right time for Kosovo to join the Council of Europe:
“In the Council of Europe, more than 72 percent of member states have already recognized the Republic of Kosovo, while others have come closer to each other. It’s the right time and the right approach to take an important step forward in the further integration of Kosovo and at the same time the entire region. “
At the end of his press statement, Michael Brand demands that the German government take concrete steps:
“Now it’s important that the federal government not only talks, but also acts actively. The Federal Chancellor and the Foreign Minister have personally provided their support to the Kosovo leadership. “This must now be reflected in concrete action.” (ash)
