UNICEF has verified that approximately 100 children were killed in Ukraine in April alone, but the current figures could be higher.
“Last month alone, the UN verified that about 100 children were killed and we believe the current figures are significantly higher.”said UNICEF Deputy Executive Director Omar Abdi.
A senior UNICEF official at the UN Security Council said the conflict has created a crisis for child protection.
“More children have been injured and have faced serious violations of their rights, millions more have been displaced. The war in Ukraine, like all wars, is a crisis of child protection and children’s rights“, He said.
Abdi said education is also under attack and that schools continue to be used for military purposes.
“Since last week, at least 15 out of 89, one in six UNICEF-supported schools in eastern Ukraine have been damaged or destroyed since the start of the war. “Hundreds of schools across the country are reported to have been hit by heavy artillery, airstrikes and other explosive weapons in populated areas.” said the official.
