A Paraguayan prosecutor who had convicted many gangsters and drug traffickers was shot dead yesterday by a paid killer while on his honeymoon with his pregnant wife in Colombia.
Marcelo Pecci was killed in the coastal city of Cartagena while on the beach with journalist Claudia Aguilera where they had come after their wedding in April.
A few hours ago the couple posted photos from the beach commenting: “The most beautiful wedding gift… life to come is a testament to love.”
The 45-year-old Paraguayan Pecci was shot by two men near the Decameron Baru Hotel. His wife, who escaped unharmed, said the attackers fled on a water motorbike after shooting Marcelo twice, once in the head and once in the back.
Paraguayan President Mario Abdo Benitez condemned the ‘cowardly’ murder and vowed to step up the fight against organized crime.
Speaking yesterday for the first time after the crime, Ms. Aguilera said: “The day started peacefully and we went to the beach after breakfast.”
She was later quoted by the Colombian daily El Tiempo as saying: “Two men attacked Marcelo. “They came in a small boat or a water motor, it seems to me, I did not see it well.”
Describing how the killers escaped from the sea, she said: “We were helped by other people who were on the beach but he was dead. “We had not received any threats before, everything happened so fast.”
“The woman said that the killers had gone directly to Marcelo, had looked at him and without saying anything, had shot him to death.”
Pecci was investigating high-profile crimes in Paraguay, including the murder of a drug trafficker and the wife of a well-known footballer.
Paraguay is one of the largest producers of marijuana in Latin America, which is trafficked mainly to Argentina.
