Hospitals in Southern California are sending large amounts of medical aid to Ukraine. The Stand with Ukraine LA charity has mobilized hospitals across the country in efforts to help the war-torn country.
About ten tons of medical equipment and supplies for the trauma, surgery and intensive care unit were collected by volunteers from the Stand with Ukraine Foundation in Los Angeles, California. Among the volunteers is the American oncologist and immigrant from Ukraine, Mykola Onyshchenko.
“We have a lot of materials for treating wounds, medicines, syringes, and clothing for patients.” he says.
Six major medical centers from Los Angeles and other areas of Southern California have donated medical equipment to Ukraine.
“We put everything in different boxes, we got a list from the Ukrainian Ministry of Health with items that people in Ukraine need, so we know what they need. “We are trying to prioritize the things they need most.” says Mr. Onyshchenko.
The volunteers then load the medical aid on special planes for their transportation to Ukraine. They say they did not expect such an impressive response from medical institutions. They were forced to look for more volunteers to physically cope with the huge wave of aid with medical equipment and supplies. Many Americans, immigrants from Ukraine, Russia and Belarus offered their help in this regard.
“Many people are helping us! “They come here to help us arrange medical care before sending it to Ukraine.” says Bohdan Kalyanov from the Volunteer Center.
In Ukraine, precious medical loads are given to various charities, which then distribute them to general or military hospitals near the front lines.
The co-founder of the charity Stand with Ukraine LA, Mykhailo Lavrys, says he will raise much more humanitarian aid. The foundation is currently in talks with the Ronald Reagan Medical Center of California State University in Los Angeles (UCLA), one of the largest in the country, to send medical equipment and medicines to Ukraine.
“We have a request from the Ukrainian Ministry of Health for medical equipment and specific medicines. We are also working with the Ukrainian consulate. “Ronald Reagan Medical Center UCLA contacted us and gladly offered us all the things we asked for, all the things we were missing.” says Mykhailo Lavrys, co-founder of the Stand with Ukraine LA Foundation
The plane with medical aid is expected to depart for Ukraine in mid-May./VOA
