Police in Indonesia today used pressure pumps and tear gas to disperse protesters in Papua province who oppose partitioning reform.
Thousands of protesters also gathered in several towns around the Jaiapura center which the government seeks to divide into several different provinces, ostensibly from rebel activity.
Authorities say the country will be better governed this way but Papua residents say the move strengthens government control over the mineral-rich region.
In March two people were killed and others injured in a protest against similar plans in the town of Iahukimo in Papua.
Authorities today used water pumps in several protests on the outskirts of Jaiapura, national police chief Gatot Repli Handoko told AFP.
“The students had blocked the road and were disturbing the publication, so the officers opened the blockade using pressurized water,” he said.
In the recorded images, police officers in heavy clothing were seen and gunshots were heard.
Authorities said more than 1,000 police were dispatched to protest in Papua.
