Hashim Thaçi pleaded not guilty to several new charges brought by The Hague-based Specialized Chambers.
The former president of Kosovo said that he did not understand the accusations, as there are many. “I plead not guilty, although I have not read or understood the charges, but I plead not guilty,” he said, as he attended the hearing via video link from the Hague Detention Center.
Pre-trial judge Nicolas Guillou explained that the Specialized Prosecution has presented three categories of changes in the indictment against Thaci and other former leaders of the Kosovo Liberation Army. The new charges relate to alleged crimes in two detention centers in Suhareka and one in Gjilan. “The first category was related to two detention centers in the Municipality of Suhareka, where KLA members committed crimes of persecution, imprisonment or arbitrary detention, other inhumane acts, inhuman treatment, torture, illegal murder and enforced disappearance.” , said Giullou.
“The second category had to do with two incidents of persecution and illegal murder committed in a detention center in the Municipality of Gjilan and the modification of the time when this happened,” he added. Also, the Specialized Prosecution has included in the new indictment, the suspicion of direct involvement in Thaçi’s crimes.
The new charges were not read out during the hearing, but the judge said they would be published online. After him, Kadri Veseli, Rexhep Selimi and Jakup Krasniqi are expected to appear before the Specialized Chambers, who, together with Thaçi, have a joint indictment for war crimes and crimes against humanity.
