The United Nations World Food Program warns of the imminent threat of famine in some parts of the world, and has called for the opening of war-torn Ukrainian ports as soon as possible.
“Ports in the Odessa area must be reopened urgently to prevent the hunger crisis from spiraling out of control. At the moment, the grain depots in Ukraine are full, and meanwhile, 44 million people around the world are marching towards hunger. The blockade of ports in the Black Sea has left millions of tons of grain left in silos or ships that cannot move. “This food must be allowed to leave Ukraine.”says a UN statement.
Before the war, most of the food produced by Ukraine enough to feed 400 million people was exported through its seven ports on the Black Sea.
The blockages brought by the war have already pushed prices in food markets to record levels, and in the first month after the crisis began, export prices for wheat and corn rose by 22% and 20% respectively.
The Food and Agriculture Organization also predicted that wheat production this year would be 782 million tonnes, a lower forecast than previously thought.
