The trial of a mysterious murder was forced to be stopped yesterday in India due to some unusual circumstances, where according to reports a monkey had stolen the indictment documents before they reached the court.
According to the local daily Times of Indiaofficials justified that their file of 15 pieces of evidence had been stolen by a monkey, including a knife believed to be the weapon of the crime.
At the pre-trial hearing Jaipur police were forced to admit in court that since the time of the murder in 2016, a monkey had snatched evidence while they were being transported.
Their announcement was made in a letter to the court after they were ordered to submit investigation documents.
Unfortunately, even the police officer who was supposed to guard the evidence while being transported to the village of Malkhana was initially suspended, retired and passed away.
The case concerned the murder of Shashikant Sharma, whose body was found near a police station in Jaipur, Rajasthan.
His family had reported him dead three days earlier and after finding the body residents had protested by blocking a major road in the region.
Under community pressure police had arrested two local men for the murder.
The main evidence of the case, including the knife believed to have been used in the murder, was collected and placed in a separate file for use in court.
But according to the Indian network NDTV, part of the evidence was temporarily placed under a tree as there was no space at the station.
At this time police said the monkey had snatched the evidence files and left.
Reactions have been mixed for development, with critics saying the disappearance of evidence is a staging to manipulate the outcome of the investigation.
a letter has been sent by the court to Jaipur police asking for clarification of the events and how a monkey could steal legal evidence.
