Greece is shocked again by a crime of passion in the city of Kavala, where a 55-year-old man killed his 43-year-old wife out of jealousy.
The tragic event took place at the woman’s pharmacy in a village 30 minutes away from the city, where the husband went and strangled the victim with his own hands. He then tried to kill himself with a knife, causing wounds to his hands and throat and near midnight he called the police.
According to relatives, the couple, who also had two children aged 6 and 10, had problems recently and the wife had filed for divorce.

It is the third murder of a woman within this year, while last year Greece recorded 17 murders of women by their partners and 39 during 2019-2020. One of the most sensational murders is that of 20-year-old British-born Caroline Crouch, whom her husband strangled near their 11-month-old baby.
In the ensuing killings, two Albanian women were among the victims, 31-year-old Anisa Shehu stabbed to death by her husband in an Athens neighborhood and Elona 36-year-old from Lakonia, whom her husband strangled while their two children were sleeping peacefully. in the adjoining room.
All these crimes against women by their partners have sensitized civil society making the phenomenon of femicide one of the most touched topics of the Greek media and one of the most important issues.
Many human rights organizations and activists have repeatedly called for a change in the patriarchal mentality of Greek society through information and school education, as well as the establishment of special institutions to support women abused by partners.
