May 6, for the Roma minority in all places where they live is called the day of ‘Erdelez’ and coincides with the day of St. George. It is a pagan holiday and has its origins thousands of years ago.
It is considered as the separation from the winter season and the beginning of spring. Also for the Roma, this was a day that enabled them to start migrating to warm places, as, after ‘Erdelez’, most of them started nomadic life.
It is the inhabitants of the Roma minority of Fier who enjoy this day the most, which is accompanied by the rhythms of music, traditional cooking and rites dedicated to the feast of ‘Erdelez’.
This day marked for the Roma is associated with certain rituals passed down from generation to generation to the present day.
The feast of Erdelez begins during the dinner of the day before. The representatives of the tribes inform the women, girls and boys to collect jewelry items such as: necklaces, bracelets, etc., and these are thrown into the container, mainly by single boys and girls. The vessel is filled with water in three springs. Rose, basil and leaves are thrown into it. The person who organizes the rite keeps the jewelry container all night at home, and on the morning of May 6 the jewelry distribution begins accompanied by traditional songs.
