The case of Elbasan where two minors in love with each other fled to Tirana has highlighted the importance of communicating with our teenage children.
Psychosocial services have been offered in our country’s schools for years. In the 9-year school “Skënder Caci” with 900 students, in Tirana, there is a psychologist and a social worker who deal every day with the problems of children and adolescents.
“The age group that requires more psychosocial services at school is those aged 12-14. During the conversations we have with the children, there is a tendency of parental neglect. ”
There are also parents who forbid coming to the psychologist and social worker with the argument that their child has no problems and does not need to consult with these employees.
A parent should be concerned when his child stays on the phone with or without a schedule, locked in a room, does not consume food with meals. We have many cases of girls who come and stay without food, because they want to lose weight, because they do not like their image.
When it comes to love relationships, the 12-14 age group definitely faces the first experiences of love, of attraction with the opposite sex. What worries me is the taboo that some children have in the early stages of consent. I remember a student who had started to experience her first emotions and was very ashamed of it, as her mother could even use violence if she found out.
I advise parents and teachers: Please do not insult or ridicule your children’s feelings. To like is very normal. Be present in your children’s lives, talk to them and listen. Understand their feelings. ”
