Pope Francis has been photographed using a wheelchair for the first time in public, due to knee pain that has made it difficult for him to walk.
Sky News reports that the Pope has suffered from knee pain, which has caused sciatica, a nerve condition that causes leg pain.
He took the stage and was helped to sit in a seat in front of an audience with a group of nuns and religious superiors from around the world at the Vatican.
Because of this problem the Pope has had to cancel or cut activities several times over the past month due to pain in his right knee.
He was photographed in a wheelchair last July after major bowel surgery, but this is believed to be the first time he uses one in public due to problems moving.
He has recently received several injections in an attempt to relieve the pain and return to his activities.
His health problem was apparent during Easter when he attended but did not take responsibility for the arrangements in St. Peter’s Basilica, instead sending a cardinal or archbishop to preside.
During a trip to Malta in April he was also photographed using an elevator platform to get on and off the plane.
