Russia has been described as the “successor to Nazi ideology” by a member of the Ukrainian team that was part of the peace talks between the two countries.
Mykhaylo Podolyak responded to the comments of Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. Lavrov was asked by an interviewer about his claims to Ukraine, given that the president of Ukraine is Jewish.
Lavrov said the background of President Zelensky did not matter. Referring to unproven historical claims, he suggested that Adolf Hitler “also had Jewish blood”.
In a Twitter post, Podolyak, one of President Zelensky’s aides, accused Moscow of trying to “rewrite history” in order to “justify the mass killings of Ukrainians.”
Pictures have surfaced on social media showing Russian cadets performing military exercises wearing striped arms reminiscent of the Nazis, according to the BBC.
However, the news agency Radio Free Europe writes that some of the footage being distributed is several years old.
He adds that the armbands appear to be held only to aid training exercises and are not usually seen at the country’s annual May 9 parade celebrating victory over Nazi Germany.
