Over 100 women and children inside the Azovstal steel plant were rescued the day before, but there are still many civilians left in the area, a Ukrainian MP said.
Speaking to Sky News, Andrii Osadchuk said yesterday’s evacuation “was more or less successful”, but authorities were still working to evacuate more people.
“There are still many civilians inside the steel plant and we are still doing our best to get them out.”he said.
Speaking about the possibility of evacuating Ukrainian troops from the plant, Osadchuk added: These people have been fighting for more than two months.
“In doing so, they are assisting many other units of the Ukrainian army. For today we believe they are covered by the walls of the steel factory. They have some military resources to continue the war, so we hope they will be able to survive until the Ukrainian army fights. “This plan, to the best of my knowledge, is working with the Ukrainian General Staff, so we hope to be able to rescue our heroes soon.” he added.
Osadchuk confirmed that a humanitarian effort to evacuate more civilians from the steel plant had not been carried out today.
