Pope Francis has condemned the Russian occupation of Ukraine, calling it a “macabre regression of humanity.”
The pope said the war made him “suffer and cry” and called for humanitarian corridors to be opened to evacuate stranded residents at the Azovstal factory in Mariupol, Ukraine.
Although he did not specifically criticize Russia, Francesco said Mariupol had been “barbarically bombed and destroyed.”
The United Nations believes close to 1,000 civilians are at the Azovstal steel plant, the only part of Mariupol not under Russian occupation. The organization believes that close to 100,000 civilians are inside the city of Mariupol, a city that has been the scene of intense fighting since Russia launched its occupation of Ukraine on February 24.
Ukrainian fighters at the Azovstal plant released a video on April 30 saying they were running out of food, water and other supplies, calling for help.
The pope has condemned the war several times since the start of the Russian occupation of Ukraine on February 24. He also called on all leaders in power to stop this war and bring peace to all of humanity.
