At least 10 people were killed and 20 injured in a powerful explosion that shook the Afghan capital, Kabul, on Friday, April 29, agencies reported, citing officials who said the target of the attack was the mosque.
Besmullah Habib, the deputy spokesman for the Afghan Interior Ministry, said on Friday that it was the Khalifa Aga Gul Jan mosque, west of the Afghan capital, and that the attack took place at 14:00 local time.
Hundreds of worshipers came to pray on the last Friday of the Muslim month of Ramadan and the mosque was full, locals told Reuters, raising fears the death toll could rise further.
Taliban forces have cordoned off that part of Kabul, while Taliban-appointed Interior Ministry spokesman Mohammed Nafi Takor said it was not known who was behind the attack and what type of explosive was.
A man, who was in the mosque, told Reuters that the powerful explosion occurred during prayer and that he received burns on his arms and legs.
A nurse from a nearby hospital, who declined to be identified by name, said several people in critical condition had been admitted.
Large numbers of civilians have been killed in blasts in recent weeks, some of which have been taken over by the ISIL militant group.
