Former legendary tennis champion Boris Becker was sentenced today to two and a half years in prison by a court in London for hiding assets of 2.5 million pounds in order to avoid paying off debts, write the media.
The 54-year-old German winner of six major sports championships has been found guilty of four counts of debt repayment law.
The lawsuit focused on Becker filing for bankruptcy in June 2017 from an outstanding debt of more than milionë 3 million for his luxury property in Mallorca, Spain.
Judge Deborah Taylor said Becker did not show remorse or plead guilty.
Referring to a previous Becker case of tax evasion in Germany in 2002, she said: “You did not heed the warnings and the opportunities they gave you, and this is an aggravating factor.”
“You have sought to distance yourself from your violations and bankruptcy.”
Earlier this month Becker pleaded guilty to property evasion, concealment of assets and debt.
About 20 other similar charges fell through, including refusing to hand over trophies and medals won during his career.
The jury found Becker guilty of failing to declare his stake in a 1 1m property in the German city of Leimen, hiding a 700 700,000 bank loan for that house, as well as shares in a technology company.
Becker’s lawyer, Jonathan Laidlaw, said the trial had damaged his reputation: “Boris Becker has nothing left of his great sporting career and it is no less than a tragedy. “This process has ruined his reputation and his chances of earning money.”
Despite about $ 50 million in career gains, Becker says his income was reduced after he stopped playing tennis in 1999 and after a costly divorce from his first wife and child pensions.
Boris Becker became an international tennis star at the age of 17 in 1985 when he became the youngest athlete to win Wimbledon.
Since then he has won many titles until retiring from the sport played in 1999, when he started commenting on the Wimbledon championship on the BBC.
The father of four has been living in London since 2012.
