In a meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in Moscow, Vladimir Putin once again used Kosovo’s independence to justify the Russian occupation of Crimea in 2014 and its intervention in the Donbas region in eastern Ukraine.
“I remember well the document of the International Court of Justice about Kosovo. I well remember the decision of the International Court of Justice, which states that, ‘the exercise of the right to self-determination for the territory of each country and should not require permission to declare sovereignty from that country’.
This is written in relation to Kosovo and this decision has been supported by all. “If that is the case, then the Republic of Donbas and the Republic of Donetsk have the same rights by not exercising the central authority in Kiev to declare sovereignty, as the precedent exists,” he said.
But Putin’s comment has not been well received by some in the Serbian press, including media outlets close to President Aleksandar Vucic, quoted by the Telegraph. “Putin recognizes Kosovo”, “Because of his war, Putin forgets Serbs and Kosovo”, “Celebration in Pristina, Zagreb and Sarajevo because of Putin’s statement”, and “Putin hits Serbia with a knife in the back”, were some of the headlines conveying outrage at the Kremlin chief’s statement.
According to Bosnian analyst Jasmin Mujanovic, pro-Vucic media are angry with “Moscow’s betrayal”, claiming that these could be signals that Russia may recognize Kosovo in exchange for a solution with Ukraine.
