Villagers in Demydiv, north of Kiev, practiced an unusual tactic to prevent a Russian tank attack on the capital.
According to a report in The New York Times, residents dug a nearby dam and deliberately sent water to their village, leaving it severely flooded.
The movement created a swamp that made it impossible for Russian tanks to cross and bought precious time for the Ukrainian army to build its defenses in Kiev.
Residents are already facing flood waters in their homes, but do not seem to have regretted it.
Retired Antonina Kostuchenko told the newspaper: “Everyone understands and no one regrets for a moment. We saved Kiev! ”
