Russia’s decision to cut off gas supplies to customers in Europe is “an instrument of blackmail,” said European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen.
The move is “unjustified and unacceptable” and shows Russia’s unreliability as a gas supplier, she added.
She says EU member states have emergency plans for this scenario and the European Commission is in close contact with them to ensure alternative shipments and the best possible levels of storage across the bloc.
A meeting of the gas coordination group is now under way to draft the EU ‘s coordinated response, von der Leyen adds.
“We will also continue to work with international partners to ensure alternative flows – and I will continue to work with European and world leaders to ensure security of energy supply in Europe,” she said.
