U.S. police yesterday publicly identified the Michigan officer who shot dead a 26-year-old man of color during a traffic stop earlier this month, which has rekindled anger over the brutality of U.S. law enforcement.
Christopher Schurr, has been part of the Grand Rapids police for seven years. He was confirmed yesterday as the officer who fatally shot Patrick Lyoya on April 4th.
Police Chief Eric Winstrom said the publication of Schurr’s name was in the interest of “transparency, reducing speculation and avoiding further confusion.”
The development comes two weeks after the release of the video of the arrest of the victim, during which he was suddenly shot.
The video shows Lyoya getting out of the seemingly confused car as the officer asks for the documents and orders her to get back in the car.
After a brief chase Schurr and Lyoya fight and the officer tries to shoot him with the electric pistol. But then when the detainee was lying on the ground on the lawn he pulled out his gun and shot him in the head with a bullet, US media report.
The autopsy confirmed that the bullet that killed Lyoya came from a gun held behind his head.
Lyoya was a refugee from Congo and his death sparked widespread protests in Grand Rapids where activists identified him as an example of the abusive violence of a white police officer to a detainee of color.
