The weather in Europe has fluctuated between extremely low temperatures for spring and a record hot summer last year, with scorching temperatures but also heavy rainfall, as fires in the Mediterranean region burned land the size of Cyprus.
These are the conclusions of the fifth European report on the climate situation, published on Friday, which concludes that the summer of 2021 was 1 degree Celsius hotter than the average of 1991-2020. According to this report, the average air temperature in Europe has risen by about 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.
The old continent set a new temporary heat record last summer at 48.8 degrees Celsius, recorded on the Italian island of Sicily. Previously, the hottest day in Europe was held in Athens in 1977 at 48 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, a cold rising front, created in the Atlantic and Arctic regions, descended south towards Europe, bringing unstable weather to its central and southern areas, especially in the Mediterranean.
The authors of the climate situation report say that it is not surprising that there are so many strong weather fluctuations. According to them, this phenomenon is being influenced by the continuous emissions of carbon dioxide and methane gas, both of which are generated mainly by the burning of fossil fuels. The report shows that the concentration of methane in the atmosphere, a powerful cause of the greenhouse effect, has increased significantly, especially in the last two years, at the fastest pace in a decade.
Citing the devastating July floods in Germany that killed about 200 people, a World Weather Attribution study concluded that climate change increased the likelihood of such a tragedy by nine times.
