The body, based in Washington DC, is the umbrella organization for 35 independent nations in America and oversees issues such as human rights, international security, and election monitoring.
Russia has been one of its regular observers. But at its meeting Thursday, the group passed a resolution ending that deal because of the war in Ukraine.
The resolution said it was alarmed and horrified by the Russian Federation’s aggression against Ukraine and its ongoing war and horrific atrocities committed by the Russian armed forces in Bucha, Irpin, Mariupol and other Ukrainian cities, and at the station of the Kramatorsk train.
The OAS is the oldest regional organization in the world, dating back to the First International Conference of American States, held in Washington in 1889.
