Dozens of farmers interviewed in the field by “Inside Story” consider the charity support scheme to be distributed in a discriminatory manner.
The national scheme of 2018 was more complete and offered 52 categories of support, including a refund of 100 ALL for each kg of milk delivered. But no concrete results were seen raising questions about implementation and distribution.
Xhevat Kurti, from the village of Vidhas in Lushnje, after working as a teacher for 46 years, has dedicated his whole life to setting up this modest family farm.
With much sacrifice and effort he managed to bring the number of cows he raised to 25 three years ago, but the crisis that has gripped the country is leading him to bankruptcy. Left without support and exposed to the dangers posed by this unregulated sector, this year it is impossible to keep calves, to increase the herd, leading to its extinction.
“I brought it here with a lot of sacrifice, with 25 heads. “Now I risk closing it, because I can not afford it,” said the farmer, Xhevat Kurti
Sector costs have risen to unaffordable levels for farmers, especially the smaller ones. Suffice it to mention here that for one and a half acres of land the costs for cultivation have doubled as a result of rising input prices. Meanwhile, the price of a liter of milk from the farm does not exceed 50 ALL.
“I can not keep it because everything has grown a lot. Let me calculate for you, if before the land would have wanted me to spend 165 thousand old lekë for everything, now it will be almost 100 thousand lekë more. But I can not keep them in these conditions “said the farmer, Xhevat Kurti.
How much does a kg of milk cost? Experts have calculated that a cow consumes an average of about 1,687 lekë per day for food or other needs. The cow produces 25-30 liters of milk at the same time that is traded with a maximum of 50 new lek. So, according to the account, the farmer not only does not win, but loses 100 lekë per day. But if Xhevat’s farm has 25 cows, then he loses 2,500 lekë every day. In other words, he closes the month with 75 thousand new lek losses.
The whole family is employed on this small farm, Xhevati with his wife, both pensioners and the son together with his bride, the long hours or the labor force of the family are not counted.
After experiencing an upward trend during the 2000s, in 2018 this key sector, which is also related to national security, was engulfed by a crisis which currently threatens to lead to bankruptcy a significant part of them.
