The mayor of the city of Melitopol, Ivan Fedorov, has recounted his difficult days as he was held hostage by Russian forces for almost a week.
Fedorov said those were extremely difficult and dangerous days as he realized that his life and that of all Ukrainians was worth zero to the Russians.
He stated that he had faced psychological but not physical torture and said that five to seven Russian soldiers interrogated him and had conversations with him. The mayor said that the Russians are very angry because before the war they had assumed that they would be welcomed and would not encounter resistance from the Ukrainian population.
The mayor, who is now in Rome after being released on a prisoner exchange, said he is still in regular contact with people in Melitopol.
“It was six dangerous days because I realized that for the Russians, my life and the lives of civilians were worth zero. The Russian soldiers had wanted to set an example for me. They assumed they would be welcomed, but they were not welcomed… and that is why the Russians were very, very angry. Civilians there have no food or pharmacy available and in the city it is not safe to walk the streets, he said.
