The commander of the Ukrainian navy in the city of Mariupol, Serhii Volyna, wrote a letter to Pope Francis urging him to rescue the people who had remained in the city under heavy bombardment.
In the published letter Serhii Volyna, the commander of the 36th Naval Brigade, wrote that he was ready to fight to the end to save Uknaina.
He addresses the Pope saying that he is sure that he may have seen many serious events in his life, but what is happening in Mariupol is hell on earth and says that prayers are not enough but he needs great help to save people.
“I have not seen your calls to the world and I have not read all your recent statements, I have been fighting for more than 50 days in complete siege and all that I have time for is a fierce battle for any meter of a city surrounded by the enemy. You have probably seen a lot in your life. But I’m sure you have never seen what is happening in Mariupol. Because that is what hell on earth looks like. I have little time to describe all the horrors I see here every day. In the factory [Azovstal], women with children and infants live in bunkers. Hungry and cold Every day being targeted by enemy aviation. The injured die every day because there is no medicine, no water, no food. The time has come when prayer is not enough. Help to save them. After the bombing of the drama theater, no one trusts the Russian occupiers. “Bring the truth to the world, evacuate people and save their lives from the hands of Satan, who wants to burn all living things,” said Serhii Volyna.
