The Association of Journalists of Kosovo announced on Sunday night that the first journalist from Ukraine, Lyudmila Makey, has arrived in Pristina, as part of the program “Journalists in Residence in Kosovo”.
Journalist Makey, who left Ukraine due to Russian aggression, is expected to continue her work from Pristina.
The Association of Journalists of Kosovo quotes Ms. Makey as saying after arriving at Pristina airport, that today it is dangerous to be a journalist in Ukraine, underlining that Russian forces have killed 21 journalists in Ukraine so far.
“Thank you very much to all of you for enabling me to come to Kosovo. This program enables me to remain in the profession of journalist. I am deeply touched by the fact that completely foreign people want to help us. I believe that our cooperation and solidarity from other journalists is an important step towards peace“, She is quoted as saying.
The Ukrainian journalist is the first to arrive in Kosovo after the government pledged to house 20 journalists, after the Russian aggression in Ukraine, reports VOA.
On March 1, the Kosovo government allocated 150,000 euros for the reception of twenty journalists from Ukraine. The fund will cover the expenses for the stay of Ukrainian journalists in Kosovo for a period of up to six months.
Journalist Lyudmila Makey was also received by the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti. In a statement, the Kosovo government quoted Prime Minister Albin Kurti as saying that “Kosovo strongly condemns the military aggression of the Russian Federation and the invasion of Ukraine. “Our solidarity with your people and the liberation struggle against Russian military aggression are indisputable,” he was quoted as saying, noting that Kosovo is committed to working together with allies to contribute to lasting peace and global security.
The accommodation of the Ukrainian journalist was welcomed by the President of the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine, Sergiy Tomilenko, who through the social network Twitter thanked Kosovo for the support of Ukrainian journalists. “Journalists are important!” He wrote.
