Although he did not mention the name, the Pope openly criticized Russia for involving Ukraine in a conflict he called cruel and meaningless, and urged world leaders to strive for peace.
“The leaders of the nations must hear the prayer of the people for peace. Let them hear the troubling question posed by scientists almost seventy years ago: Should we end the human race, or will humanity give up war? Peace be upon war-torn Ukraine, so tempted by violence and the destruction of this cruel and senseless war into which it was plunged“, He added further.
About 100,000 people gathered in St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican. This is the first Easter since 2019 that the public was allowed in the square to listen to the Pope’s speech, after two years of restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
