Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is determined not to relinquish any territory in northern Ukraine, even if such a decision would end the war.
In an interview with CNN, Zelensky said that the Ukrainian army is ready to fight with the Russian army in the Donbas region, a battle that he says could change the course of the war.
“Even if Russia invades Donbas, that does not mean it will not return to Kiev with the intention of occupying the capital,” Jake Tapper told CNN.
“I do not trust the Russian army and leadership. “The fact that we fought and they left Kiev does not mean that if they take Donbas, they will not go further to Kiev.”
Zelensky stressed that the world needs to be prepared as President Putin can use nuclear weapons.
He spoke in Ukrainian and English about the horrors his country has witnessed and the need for urgent assistance to equip the military with weapons to avert a future Russian offensive in eastern and southern Ukraine.
Zelensky was moved to speak out about the casualties caused by the war in Ukraine, saying it was “a great pain for me” to see life lost.
Zelensky, who lost his family in the Holocaust, was asked what he thought of world leaders who say “never again” on International Holocaust Remembrance Day, as thousands of civilians have been killed in Ukraine.
“I do not trust the world. After the escalation of Russia, we no longer trust our neighbors. The only trust is in our people, the trust in our Armed Forces and the belief that countries will support us not just in words but in action“, He said.
