More than 900 civilian bodies have been discovered in the region around the Ukrainian capital, following the withdrawal of Russian forces, Kiev police said on Friday.
Andriy Nebitov, head of the Kiev regional police force, said the bodies were left on the street or temporarily buried.
“What we are understanding is that under (Russian) occupation, people were simply executed on the streets. Every day more and more bodies are being found under rubble and in mass graves“, He said.
Russia’s Defense Ministry has announced it will step up missile attacks on the Ukrainian capital in response to Ukraine’s alleged aggression on Russian territory. Meanwhile in the southern Ukrainian city of Mikolaiv city governor Vitaly Kim said at least 5 people were killed and 15 others injured as a result of the cluster bombs.
CNN says it could not independently verify the governor’s claims, however the UN Human Rights Mission in Ukraine has previously said it had received credible information that Russian forces have used cluster bombs in areas of populated in Ukraine.
The non-governmental organization Human Rights Watch has also confirmed the use of cluster bombs by Russia throughout the conflict. Shredded bombs send a load of bombs that spread and explode over a wide area.
In 2008, over 100 countries at the United Nations signed up to ban their use. Ukraine and Russia did not sign the agreement.
