Nine humanitarian corridors were scheduled to open today in eastern and southern Ukraine, but despite this being in principle okay, it is very difficult to implement in practice.
International Committee of the Red Cross spokeswoman Lucile Marbeau, who is helping to open the corridors, said the fieldwork is challenging and difficult.
“The front line is always unstable, ceasefires are fragile and there is a need for a whole chain of command. The short time frame makes it more difficult to create this work. She said.
However, she said they had been successful in some regions, with 2,500 people evacuated yesterday from the Donetsk and Luhansk regions in eastern Ukraine. In other areas like Mariupol, she said evacuating the corridors was more difficult to implement, with people heading out of the besieged city, exposing themselves to great danger.
She added that humanitarian corridors are also vital for bringing humanitarian aid to civilians who are unable to leave.
