According to investigators, the extremist group that aimed to attack the power grid planned bomb attacks to create a situation “similar to the civil war” and to overthrow the government in Germany.
Police in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate have announced that they have uncovered a right-wing extremist chat group that was planning bomb attacks on the power grid in Germany. Investigators said the extremist group aimed to overthrow democratic power in the country through bomb attacks across Germany. They hoped that by attacking Germany’s energy infrastructure they could create a “civil war-like” situation to overthrow the country’s system of government.
Mainz-based Land Police (LCA) officials said individuals planning bomb attacks on Germany’s energy infrastructure belonged to a group calling itself the “Vereinte Patrioten” (United Patriots).
The group intended that the attack on the country’s energy infrastructure would cause a continuous power outage, which could create a situation similar to a “civil war”. This situation would then enable the overthrow of the elected government in Germany and consequently of its democratic system.
The LKA reported that raids had been carried out against members of the group throughout Germany because of their plans to plant bombs as well as engage in other violent activities.
The arrests came just a week after a massive nationwide operation by German police, which led to the arrest of four key individuals. About 800 police officers raided 60 premises and apartments of people affiliated with the neo-Nazi groups Atomwaffen Division (AWD), Combat 18 (C18) and Knockout 51 (K51) ./ DW
