Pope Francis performed the “Foot Wash” ceremony with twelve prisoners during a visit to the Civitavecchia prison in northwestern Rome as part of the commemoration of Good Thursday before Easter.
A video released by the Vatican showed the Pope washing and kissing the feet of prisoners.
“This is a sign of love for the brothers and sisters here, a sign that means: I do not judge anyone, I try to see everyone. “There is only one who can judge, God, he judges and forgives.”
The visit to the prison, which was private and closed to the public, was the second of two services Thursday, the start of three days of intense Easter activities. On Good Friday, the day Christians commemorate the death of Jesus by crucifixion, the Pope holds two services, including a candlelight procession around the Colosseum in Rome called the “Way of the Cross.”
The annual event consists of the 14 Stations of the Cross, the phase between the death sentence of Jesus and his burial. Often the event is adapted so that those who carry the cross from one station to another reflect world events.
This year, the Vatican’s decision to allow both Ukrainians and Russians to take part in the procession has sparked clashes with Ukrainian Catholic leaders, who want the decision reconsidered.
On Easter Sunday, the most important day in the Christian liturgical calendar, the pope will hold Mass in St. Peter’s Square and then deliver his message and blessing “Urbi et Orbi”.
