International Criminal Court (ICC) Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan visited the Ukrainian cities of Bucha and Borodyanka this week.
Mass graves and civilian casualties were discovered in these cities after the withdrawal of Russian forces in early April.
“Ukraine is a crime scene. We are here because we have good reason to believe that crimes within the jurisdiction of the ICC are being committed. “We must break through the fog of war to reach the truth.”Khan said after visiting Bucha, according to CNN.
Yesterday Khan met with Prosecutor General of Ukraine Iryna Venediktova in Kiev to co-operate in an independent ICC investigation.
“The voices of those affected by the alleged crimes should be at the center of our independent work to establish the truth. Survivors and victims’ families will be full partners in our collective efforts to deliver justice“, Khan further added.
The International Criminal Court formally opened an investigation into the situation in Ukraine on March 2.
