Two days after the US government sanctioned former MP Aqif Rakipi and RTV Ora News owner Ylli Ndroqi for corruption and links to organized crime, Albania receives another US yellow card.
The US Department of State’s annual report on human rights lists a list of problems for our country, emphasizing once again the gangrene of corruption. The US Embassy in Tirana, commenting on this report says:
The United States is committed to putting democracy and human rights at the heart of our foreign policy. As noted in the report on Albania, human rights should include an independent judiciary, free from political pressure, intimidation or corruption. The United States strongly supports justice reform to end impunity, accountability for corrupt officials, organized crime, and the strengthening of the rule of law in Albania.
This report for the past year notes that “problems with the independence of the judiciary as the vetting process continued, restrictions on freedom of expression and the press; and corruption pervasive in all branches of government and local institutions ”.
“Impunity, the DASH report said, remained a problem, although the Specialized Anti-Corruption Body and anti-corruption courts made significant progress during the year in investigating, prosecuting and convicting senior officials and organized crime.”
The report criticizes the government when it says:
“The government has not effectively enforced legislation that provides for criminal penalties for corruption by public officials and prohibits individuals with criminal convictions from serving as mayors, members of parliament, or in government or state positions.”
Secretary of State Antony Blinken, commenting on the report as a whole, spoke in a disturbing tone, stating that “the backlash on respect for human rights unfortunately continues.”
