Northern Macedonia has decided to buy 100,000 Russian vaccines against the coronavirus, following an earlier decision to provide another 200,000 Chinese vaccines. Macedonian Prime Minister Zoran Zaev announced that he had forwarded to the institutions the instructions for contracting the contract for the supply of vaccines “Sputnik V”.
He explained that from the information he received from the Minister of Health Venko Filipce, the country has the capacity to order 100,000 doses of other vaccines, thus fulfilling the general plan “” I have given instructions for the supply of 100 thousand Russian vaccines. For everything that has to do with vaccines, we have done our job, orders, contracts… “, declared Zoran Zaev.
Vaccination against COVID-19 in northern Macedonia started on February 17, with the first shipment of 4,680 Pfizer vaccines donated by Serbia. The rest of the entire shipment of 8,000 doses from Serbia is expected to arrive in Skopje next week. Prime Minister Zaev said that by the end of this month the government expects a response from “Pfizer” for the 800,000 doses for which talks have been held with the American company.
Meanwhile, 200,000 doses of Chinese vaccines are expected to arrive in early March in this state. The first to be vaccinated are the health workers of the Infectious Diseases Clinic in Skopje, and then other clinics will be vaccinated.
The government has drafted a general plan, which provides for the vaccination of elderly people after doctors, those with chronic diseases, employees of educational institutions and kindergartens, and then the rest of the population. The Macedonian executive vaccinated at least 500 thousand people to achieve some kind of immunization of the population. In the neighboring country 3,063 people have lost their lives to coronavirus while over 6,700 cases are still active.
