A dramatic cable car accident at a popular pilgrimage site in India left one dead and dozens more hung in the air yesterday before being rescued by helicopters.
About 48 people were traveling up the Trikuk hill in eastern India when three cable car cabins collided with each other.
Officials said one woman lost her life in the crash and another was seriously injured, while about 25 people were rescued by emergency services.
“We have rescued 24 people but there are still people trapped,” an emergency official at the scene told AFP.
He added that two tourists had been thrown from their cable cars and had survived with minor injuries.
Authorities called for airlift to evacuate the pilgrims from their cabins and to bring food and water to others waiting to be rescued.
The Trick cable car is 775-meters long and is frequented by pilgrims visiting the temple of the Hindu saint Baba Badianath.
