Spain said on Sunday it had seized more than 1,000 embalmed animals, including hundreds of endangered or extinct species, in one of the largest seizures of its kind.
The Civil Guard said the private collection, valued at around 29m euros, was discovered in a hut in Betera, near Valencia in eastern Spain.
Of the 1,090 animals seized, 405 were classified as protected, endangered or extinct, including a rare horned antelope once found in parts of the African continent.
A stuffed Bengal tiger, considered nearly extinct, was also found, along with a cheetah, lizard, polar bears, white rhinos and 198 herds of elephants.
The Civil Guard said Sunday that it was “the largest group of nationally protected animals and one of the largest in Europe.”
The owner of the collection is under investigation for smuggling and some environmental crimes.
