Russia has appointed a new commander for the war in Ukraine, who is one of the most experienced military officers in Russia.
General Alexander Dvornikov, 60, is said to be leading the effort expected to hit the eastern regions.
US officials say Dvornikov has a history of brutality against civilians in Syria and other war zones.
White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said no appointment of any general could erase the fact that Russia has already faced a strategic failure in Ukraine.
“This general will simply be another perpetrator of crimes and brutality against Ukrainian civilians. And the United States, as I said before, is determined to do everything we can to support the Ukrainians as they resist him and resist the forces he commands. “ said Sullivan
