The European Commission has filed a complaint against Germany with the European Court of Justice alleging that the bloc’s powerful member state has failed to produce protection plans for at least 4,000 endangered environmental areas.
Germany has not yet designated a significant number of regions as separate protected areas, according to the Commission statement.
“The commission gave an official warning in 2015 and after discussions with the German authorities, sent an additional formal announcement in 2019, which was followed by another letter in February 2020. According to the latest information provided by the authorities, Germany is still failing to designate a significant number of natural areas as protected. This has a significant impact on the quality and effectiveness of measures taken in this regard. For this reason, the Commission is referring Germany to the European Court of Justice,“- it was said in the statement.
The Daily Express writes that Germany was particularly criticized for failing to implement the Flora and Fauna Directive, for the conservation of natural habitats and for the protection of wildlife. Another point strongly attacked was the designation of protected areas in order to protect or restore the population of different species.
